Hey! I’m Makayla, Bri’s baby sister, and I have the honor of being a guest blogger! This week’s topic… College fashion trends: the good, the bad, and the ugly. But before I get started, here’s a little bit about me! I’m 19 and basically the complete opposite of Bri. I’m tall, she’s short ;). I’m a singer, she’s a designer. I’m kind of quiet, she’s outgoing. I’m dependent on others, she’s extremely independent… The list is endless. But our biggest difference is that she’s fashionable, and my fashion is what I like to call “laid back”. My classic look is jeans and a sweatshirt (one time, my mom told me to change my style because she was sick of seeing me in a sweatshirt every day!!!!). But now that I’m in college, I’ve stepped outside of my “clothing comfort zone” and you can catch me wearing cuter, more flattering clothes!
I recently completed my first-year at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. It’s a small, private school and… I LOVE IT! (You can find out more about Gustavus at: www.gustavus.edu) As of now, I’m majoring in psychology and minoring in music! When I’m not studying, I spend my free-time volunteering at the local animal shelter, planning concerts with campus activities board, singing in the choir, and of course, hanging out with friends. I’ve met amazing, talented people at my first year at Gustavus, and I can’t wait to go back in the fall!!
With meeting new people comes new fashion trends. Some are good, some are bad, and some are downright ugly! Here’s a breakdown of what you might see day-by-day at a college in the mid-west!
**Please excuse my photo-taking abilities…**
Sunday- a.k.a “Comfy” day
Pictured clothing:
-Victoria’s Secret yoga pants
-T-shirt (tie-dyed at a camp that changed my life, read about it here: www.celebrate-me.com)
Sunday on campus is when everyone buckles down and gets their homework done. You can find most girls in a simple t-shirt with yoga pants. This is what I call a “tweener” outfit- a.k.a in between good and bad. It’s good, because it’s comfy and simple, but most people wouldn’t want to leave campus in it.
Rating: Tweener
Monday- a.k.a “I want to dress up because it’s Monday, but still be comfortable” day
Pictured clothing:
-Victoria’s Secret black leggings
-Forever 21 button-down
-Famous Footwear boots
Leggings are every girl’s secret at college- you can wear them with nearly everything. Dress them up with a button down, or dress them down with a big, slouchy sweatshirt. In this particular outfit, the boots and button-down add a little spunk to make comfy clothes look fashionable.
Rating: Good
Tuesday- a.k.a “It’s Tuesday and I’m tired” day
Pictured clothing:
-Kohl’s button-down
-American Eagle shorts
-Ugg boots
The day I saw this outfit on campus, I almost had a heart attack… Literally. I couldn’t help but laugh. Everyone reading this needs to promise me that they will never be caught dead wearing Uggs with shorts! Don’t big, fuzzy boots defeat the purpose of wearing shorts?! Shorts = summer. Uggs = winter. As Bri and I say, “IDGI” (I don’t get it). :)
Rating: UGLY
Wednesday- a.k.a “I’m sick of studying” day
Pictured shoes:
-Crocs
Crocs aren’t only seen on Wednesdays… But they are a common occurrence. I’m not a fan of Crocs, and I agree with Bri- If you’re under the age of 10, or in a garden, Crocs are acceptable. If you are over the age of 10, and not in a garden, you simply look like swiss cheese.
Rating: Bad
Pictured shoes:
-Bay, Hay and Feed rain boots
This is a cute alternative to Crocs. If it’s a rainy day on campus, many of the girls can be found sporting cute, patterned rain boots!
Rating: Good
Thursday- a.k.a “It’s almost the weekend” day
Pictured clothing:
-Columbia fleece
-Michael Kors down jacket
-American Eagle skinny jeans
-Famous Footwear crop boots
This is a classic look on a chilly day. Zip-up fleece jackets are versatile and an easy cover up on a blustery day. In the winter, Gustavus gets a little Gustie (if you catch my drift!). Down jackets are all the rage- They cover you from head to toe (almost!), and protect you against the harsh winds!
Rating: Good
Friday- a.k.a “Gustie wear” day
Pictured clothing:
-Bookmark Gustavus sweatshirt
Fridays at Gustavus are Gustie pride days! Many students whip out their favorite Gustavus sweatshirts, t-shirts, and/or sweatpants to make it a fun day, filled with Gustie spirit! This is another “tweener” outfit- it’s great on-campus, but you wouldn’t want to go on a first date wearing this! ;)
Rating: Tweener
Saturday- a.k.a “Going out” day
Pictured clothing:
-Target shirt
-Forever 21 bandage skirt
-Famous Footwear boots
Saturdays are when campus is hopping! There are many on-campus events and this is the night when people hit the town! This is a classic “going out” look. It’s dressy, but not too revealing. It’s also versatile- in the cold winter months, just add a cute pair of tights and you’re set! If it’s hot out, just switch out the shirt for a loose fitting tank top.
Rating: Good
Well, there you have it! Visit any college campus in the mid-west and you’re sure to see one of these outfits- whether it be good, bad, or ugly!
