Happy Valentine’s Day

By Sydney Reiman

I, and I am assuming many other fashion-forward individuals, always look forward to holidays and excuses to buy a new outfit! But, let’s face it, sometimes we just can’t swing it because of money, time, or it just may not be necessary. This Valentine’s Day, being a college student on a budget, I simply can’t afford spending my funds on another red or pink dress that I may be hesitant to wear again. With that said, I have a few suggestions for others in my same situation. Keep in mind, these tips are not just for the ladies who have a special someone they are spending this lovey-dovey holiday with. You could easily incorporate these looks for your work day or drinks with the girls. In my opinion, Valentine’s Day isn’t just a date night, it’s a whole day to celebrate femininity and love all around. Embrace it with fashion!

First, take a good look into the deep dark shadows of your long lost closet. I know, this always seems to be a chore when you think you know everything you have and you don’t want to wear something you’ve had forever. I feel the same way, but there’s a trick. You have to clear your mind; look at each piece with a fresh set of eyes. For example, we all have a little black dress (or a few), look for one with extra feminine details, maybe lace, a low back, or a sweetheart neckline. Now, take that feminine basic and pair it with something you’ve never paired it with before. Try a belt, a casual cardigan, or some platform wedges you’ve always paired with something else. You could even wear something on top to make it look like a skirt, pair another skirt over the bottom half and use the top of the dress as a shirt, or wear a lacey slip underneath to let it peak-a-boo from the bottom or the top.

My second suggestion, don’t limit yourself to red and pink, this is something I know I have done in the past and makes creating an outfit difficult. Yes, they are the colors that first come to mind when we think of this lovely day, but there are a number of other fashionable options if you want something a little less bold. Consider the sweet pastels of the candy hearts that seem to symbolize Valentine’s Day and use those as your outfit’s color palette. You could bring out those pastel colored skinny jeans you bought at the end of last season and pair them with a lacey cream top and nude shoes and accessories. Maybe pair one of those springy floral dresses you’ve already invested in for next season, with some cozy tights, ankle booties, and a casual blazer.

Finally, if you feel you must invest in something new (sometimes the urge just can’t be resisted), go for unique costume jewelry. It can be super cheap and pretty easy to find. My go-to’s are Forever21, Charlotte Russe, and H&M but many little boutiques also carry inexpensive accessories. Costume jewelry is always a fun statement to add to any outfit and can boost your confidence when you’re on a date or going from a day to night look. I would suggest either a red statement necklace with a matching ring or a set of oversized faux pearls for this occasion. I like the element costume jewelry adds because you can use it in so many different ways and with so many different looks, yet it always looks unique.

Most of all, embrace your femininity on this special day of the year and enjoy it with whoever you are sharing your love with! Eat lots of chocolate, drink champagne, and surround yourself with loads of love. We all deserve it!! XOXO, Sydney

Well done again! I love these little tips and as one who just moved and had to take a new look at everything in my closet, you just gave me tons of ideas for freshening up what I kept and hold dear. Thanks Sydney! You got this!
