Bri, I, too, have experienced suicide (attempted, not succeeded) in my life from a parent. I would love to be there to support you, my friend. Whatever you need, whenever you need it, let me know.

What a brave and bold move. These are both adjectives that I would have applied to you anyways, but I'm glad to have the opportunity to tell you so (again). Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help you prepare!

I'm not saying that we should all go out and change the world.... the littlest of actions on the part of one can be so immensely impactive (not a word, I know) on the life of another. Take for example - me! 20 years ago my mom enrolled me in the 'Big Brothers, Big Sisters' program at the local college. I was paired with a college student that spent a few hours a month with me. Not a lot of time, right? Not only was she a HUGE impact on my life at the time, she remains a positive mentor in my life 20 years later (I stayed at her house with her family last night!). Giving an hour a week, or $5 a month could seem like nothing - but it could mean the world of difference to another.

Also, don't just give - give to an organization that you're passionate about! Animal shelters, childrens groups, homeless shelters, food banks, theaters, etc. Non-profits are suffering more than they ever have due to budget cuts and decreased donations. Time and money are more valuable now than they ever have been.

We are so passive in this society when it comes to change and giving. What if we were active? What if we actually did something that created change? something we're passionate about.

You have a valid point, Bri. It does take marketing, creative marketing, to create awareness and some change. but yes, the doing is what makes it happen. It takes stellar people who commit fully to running a nonprofit. And it takes passion from our hearts to vote on how we create change. Whether its through dollars or donating time (donating time, and sitting on boards volunteering, being a camp counselor, is what I've done.)

Where does the answer lie? In 1-1 volunteering on the front? In the trenches? Marketing a movement? Putting a vote to issues that aren't so sexy? Like human trafficking? Or striking a painful chord in one's heart? Do we always have to resort to pain to create change? or can we move to prevention?

Or does it lie in changing a mindset so we can erase these social issues needing to be addressed in the macro-society?

Can we combine what we're fantastic at in work with an issue we're passionate about? That's leverage, that's movement, that's change.

The question of course, is WHEN?
